I wanted to remind our readers disability checks can be early or late around the holidays. Claims handlers go out on vacation using up valuable PTO time before the end of the year. If your claims handler “forgets” to approve or release your benefit check you may be waiting until after the New Year to receive your December check.
Therefore, we recommend (non-clients) call their claims handlers and ask them to be sure to release benefit checks even if they will be out of the office. This one call can cause a great deal of grief to families who are depending on checks to provide food and gifts.
I should also mention the problem of receiving December checks late is unique to Unum. In our experience this problem is not shared by the other disability insurers. Therefore, we’re recommending all non-client Unum insureds make a proactive phone call and be sure the December check is scheduled for payment.
If by chance, your check does not arrive on time, don’t panic. Usually, when the claims handler gets back from vacation, checks are approved and issued. One phone call or quick letter to the disability insurer can save you a great deal of worry around the holidays. Everyone needs their December check, so make that call to Unum and insure yours is scheduled to be released.
This goes for the Thanksgiving check if your release date is around the holidays. Thanks.
